History of Maple Grove Homes

Maple Grove was an unknown area until 1851 when Louis Gervais settled there.  Only 4 short years later, the town included a church, town hall, and several houses.  The city had begun!  Maple Grove was initially named for its large stands of maple trees which were significant sources for Maple syrup.  This syrup was sold throughout the Midwest and was known to be some of the largest amounts sold from a single source in the area.

Like many of its cousins in the south metro, Maple Grove remained a sleepy farming community up until the 1970s.  The areas population changed only slightly in the 80 or so years from its inception.  In the 1970s, the Twin Cities interstate system was built making Maple Grove in the middle of the 494/94/694 and Highway 169 corridor.  The city soon became one of the most fastest growing cities in the state.

This was spurred on even more in the 1990s with the addition of significant retail presence located just off Interstate 694 on Hemlock lane.  Maple Grove Real Estate has also boomed during this time adding 1000s of homes and dozens of townhouse projects.  This is the previous site of a 2000 acre gravel mining area owned by C.S. McCrossan that has been in business since the 1920s.  This new development mixed retail, office, restaurants, and homes and was called Arbor Lakes.  This area has more retail that any other city in the state, second only to the Mall of America.  Maple Grove will soon move into the number one spot for retail square footage among Minnesota cities.

As of 2000, over 50,000 people lived in Maple Grove Homes in 17,500 households.  There are many new families in this area with 46% of the households that have children under the age of 18 in them.  The majority of the population is under the age of 44, with almost 65% of the population under 44 years old.  According to a 2007 estimate, the median income for homes in Maple Grove was just under $90,000 with only 1.4% of the population below the poverty line.

Maple Grove does not have a significant number of large employers in their city.  Boston Scientific has a regional facility here for research, development, and manufacturing.  It does employ over 3000 people with many coming from the Maple Grove houses near by.  The City of Maple Grove and the School District 279 are other major employers, with many smaller private businesses rounding out the employer pool.

School District 279 is actually serves the following areas: Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Plymouth, Corcoran, Dayton and Hassan. A portion of Maple Grove is also served by the Wayzata School District. Other schools in Maple Grove include Heritage Christian Academy and Cedarcrest Academy, both private schools of academic excellence.  In 2000 the voters passed a $140 million bond referendum to improve and build schools in the area.
